Look: Wedding crashers left $1 gift, Polaroid photo

Aug. 9 (UPI) -- A New Jersey bride is searching for a pair of wedding crashers who left a card and a $1 gift so she can buy them a drink as a thank you gesture. Karen Fox said in a Facebook post the couple attended her Sunday wedding to husband Michael and left a congratulations card with a handwritten message: "Dear Fox's, 1) Congratulations! 2) Sorry for crashing your wedding. 3) Best of luck!" The card contained a photo of the couple and a $1 bill the two strangers wrote was a "buck for luck." Aimee Boardman, the maid of honor at the wedding, said she spotted the couple at the wedding but didn't question them. "The bride also told me the next morning that she believed she might have had wedding crashers . She said she had noticed the couple, assuming the male was her husband's friend that she hadn't met," Boardman told the Parsippany Patch. "But then she met that one friend that she hadn't met before, later in the night. She s

Critics Blast a Portland Plan to Divert Money Earmarked for the Black Community to Help a Health Care Giant

Leesha Posey remembers cutting across a vacant lot in North Portland on her way to Harriet Tubman Middle School . "It's been empty since I was a little girl," says Posey, 41. That was three decades ago. But the lot still sits empty—a rarity in a city where vacant land is coveted, especially in the red- hot North Williams Avenue corridor . Its emptiness is a reminder of what the city and its urban renewal agency , Prosper Portland , took from the black community . In the 1960s, the city-owned agency, then known as the Portland Development Commission , condemned vast tracts of inner North and Northeast Portland . The takings—including the still-vacant block at the northwest corner of North Williams Avenue and Russell Street—allowed urban renewal, including construction of parts of Interstate 5, the Oregon Convention Center and Legacy Emanuel Hospital . But in the process, the agency gutted neighborhoods and dispersed the black community . In a belated ef

Florida slaying puts spotlight on possible neo-Nazi plot as details emerge

Image
The slayings of two young men in Florida, allegedly at the hands of their roommate, has exposed disturbing evidence of a credible neo-Nazi threat to public safety, federal investigators say. Devon Arthurs, the 19-year-old co-founder of the obscure neo-Nazi group "Atomwaffen Division," was arrested in the May 19 fatal shooting of his roommates, 18-year-old Andrew Oneschuk and 22-year-old Jeremy Himmelman . At the time of the arrest, officials said Arthurs claimed he killed Oneschuk and Himmelman to thwart a domestic terrorist attack by Atomwaffen, which is German for “atomic weapon.” “I prevented the deaths of a lot of people,” Arthurs said in a rambling statement, according to officials. Asked why his roommates planned such an attack, he said, “Because they want to build a Fourth Reich.” Related Image undated photo provided by Kianna Kaizer, shows Jeremy Himmelman and his girlfriend Kianna Kaizer . Wisconsin man runs back inside burning apartments to save people, pets

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. - The American Red Cross had a busy weekend in Brown County helping dozens of families forced out of their homes in weekend fires. In Ashwaubenon, 15 people were left without a home after Sunday's fire at the Foxcroft Apartments. On Sunday evening, tenants there heard a noise no one can truly prepare for. "Cooking dinner and then fire alarms started going off," one said. Smoke began to fill the units from the second floor where the fire is believed to have started. "Looked up and sure enough I could see smoke coming over the building," said a tenant. Within minutes of noticing the smoke and flames, firefighters arrived on scene. "Two of the units are heavily involved with the fire and the rest of the complex suffered severe water and smoke damage," said Chief Eric Dunning with Ashwaubenon Public Safety . While everyone was running out of the burning building , one man who lives there was running the opposite way to offer his neig

Affordable Sticker Shock -- Climbing home and rental prices hurting chances of poorer people putting roofs over their heads | Jim Parker

Coast to coast, the housing industry currently favors the home seller as prices are rising, sales surging and inventories dwindling -- which leave the residences on the market more valuable. Take Seattle as a caffeinated example. The northwest city of 3. 5 million people boasts the hottest housing market in the country since last fall, according to the Case- Shiller home price index and reported this summer in the Seattle Times. The typical single-family house in metro Seattle cost 12 .9 percent more in April than a year ago, the report notes. Other fast-rising markets are Portland, Oregon; Dallas; Denver; and Detroit, up 9.3 to 7.4 percent respectively. Those totals compare with a 5. 5 percent national price growth rate . What's good for owners and well-off buyers can be doubly troubling for at least one group: lower income property shoppers including first-time homebuyers who can't afford average and midpoint home prices or apartment rents . According to studies, the na

Tenants facing water shutoffs over complex's $700K debt - Story

ATLANTA - The city of Atlanta cut off water service at a northwest Atlanta apartment complex Monday since, officials say, the complex's owner owes nearly $700,000 in unpaid water bills . The people who live at the Sierra Ridge Apartments on Delmar Lane tell FOX 5 they paid their water bills as part of their rent, but the money, apparently, never made it to the city. When the Mitchell family arrived home Monday morning , there was no running water in the sinks or the kitchen, forcing them to store water buckets throughout their home. The couple has three children, who must be clean for the first day of school on Tuesday. “We done paid our rent and just for them to cut the water off at a short notice and we don't know what is going on,” said James Mitchell , a resident. “They don't treat us like we are human beings because you don't do a human being like this,” said Precious Mitchell , a resident. The residents have found a powerful ally in community activist Derri

Their son Trevor, the Princess’s bodyguard and sole survivor of the crash that killed her, is lying unconscious in the nearby PitiĂ©-SalpĂŞtrière hospital. There is huge media and public interest in Trevor’s recovery, as his memories may unlock the cause of the crash. Suddenly a car races towards them, and Ernie pushes Jill out of its way just in time. Corte Madera apartment complex that sparked protests nearly ready for renting

CORTE MADERA, Calif. (KGO) -- Corte Madera's Town Council will hear a report updating the reconstruction of a brand new and controversial apartment complex , Tam Ridge Residences . Its 180 units should have opened a year and a half ago, but that was before inspections revealed water leaks and wood rot that forced MacFarlane Partners LLC to tear much of it apart, and build it again. MacFarlane's legal case against the original contractor has led to a multi- million dollar lawsuit . A company spokesperson shared little regarding the cost of this project, but said it is moving along and expects to begin renting in June. Analysts expect rents in the $3,000 to $5,000 per month range. Corte Madera approved the project after the Association of Bay Area Governments told the city it needed more high density housing . It was controversial from the start, sparking protests about the architecture and additional traffic. Project Manager Phil Roy showed how some 240 workmen have rip

Best Accommodation - Review of Pegasus Apartments, Stafylos

My husband and I, with two children (boys of 8 and 12 years) spent two unforgettable weeks in Skopelos during July this year, in apartments Pegasos. What distinguishes this accommodation in the first place is courtesy of their hosts (who very first day brought us organic vegetables from their garden), their kindness and willingness to help at every opportunity (by giving helpful advices which beaches and important placesto visit , where to buy good honey or in which restaurant to eat). In addition, apartments distinguishes exceptional purity (towels are changed daily, bed linen every three days, and pillowcases even more often). In front of apartments there is a large pool which is very nice maintained. Nights on the island are very pleasant for sleeping, especially bearing in mind that the apartments are surrounded by greenery (you do not need air-conditioned in July) and the place is very peaceful. The position of the apartment is excellent, since you are only 2-3 minutes by car

Piece by piece, the case for severing Britain’s ties to Europe is falling apart | Martin Kettle | Opinion

Image
T hose who switched off with a sigh of relief in July may not have noticed. But something big is slowly stirring in the undergrowth of British politics. Fact by fact, announcement by announcement, the case for Britain to remain in the European Union’s single market and customs union is growing stronger and more irresistible by the day. Such an outcome is most definitely not this government’s policy. But, this autumn, something will have to give. Over the past 10 days David Davis ’s Brexit department has published seven so- called partnership papers : important documents covering a wide range of subjects, from customs and Northern Ireland to civil justice and, most recently, disputes mechanisms, including the role of the European Court of Justice. According to the introductory blurb inside each, these papers are all about forming a bespoke post-Brexit partnership with the EU. Yet, by intention or accident, they do something very different. Together they make a case for sticking with t
