The Atlantic Monthly/Volume 18/Number 106/The Chimney-Corner for 1866

THE CHIMNEY-CORNER FOR 1866. VIII. HOW SHALL WE ENTERTAIN OUR COMPANY? “T he fact is," said Marianne, "we must have a party. Bob don't like to hear of it, but it must come. We are in debt to everybody: we have been invited everywhere, and never had anything like a party since we were married, and it won't do." "For my part, I hate parties," said Bob. "They put your house all out of order, give all the women a sick-headache, and all the men an indigestion; you never see anybody to any purpose; the girls look bewitched, and the women answer you at cross-purposes, and call you by the name of your next-door neighbor, in their agitation of mind. We stay out beyond our usual bedtime, come home and find some baby crying, or child who has been sitting up till nobody knows when; and the next morning, when I must be at my office by eight, and wife must attend to her children, we are sleepy and headachy. I protest against making overtures to entrap some hund

The one small furniture piece that can complete a room

In the world of interior design, console tables are emerging as a must-have piece thanks to their ability to deliver maximum visual impact in a minimal amount of space. And the handy storage pieces are finding their way into homes in new and surprising ways. Here are a few of our favorite places to use a console table. UNDER A TV Unlike days of old, when we had big, bulky TV units to design a room around, today’s streamlined flatscreens can fit in small spaces with no fuss. Rather than dealing with a large TV stand , slide a console table under the TV, with the TV either mounted on the wall above it like artwork, or perched on top. Use the tabletop for a display or storage. UNDER ARTWORK Big, bold, modern artwork is very popular right now as it really wakes up a wall and makes a huge statement in a room. A perfect spot for a large painting — or any artwork, from a mirror to a grid of photos to a pair of botanicals — is over a lovely console . The table won’t compete with the art, b

120 apartments to be built at Four Winds Field

Image
Consider it an outside the park home run. The owner of the South Bend Cubs has plans to build 120 apartments just outside the fence at Four Winds Field. “You’re looking at two buildings that kind of begin in centerfield and them move toward the stadium and then you’re going to have more of those buildings extending to the right and kind of left field areas that will be able to look in, of course, the analogy is kind of a Wrigley Ville type feel to it,” said South Bend’s Acting Direct of the Community Investment Department , Brian Pawlowski. Some of the buildings will even feature signature rooftop seating . “And those spaces you know in right and left field are envisioned as not just private space. There will be availability for public space as well, to kind of have events on that rooftop area to look in and things like that,” Pawlowski said. Plans call for four buildings in all. Each will be three or four stories tall. The project would also provide 10,000 square fee

Young Luxury Buyers Want ‘Hippie’ Amenities

More developers are finding 1970s “hippie-inspired” amenities—with high-end twists—to be more appealing for younger generations buying into upscale apartments or condos, The New York Times reports.  For example, a luxury rental complex on Staten Island in New York, called Urby Staten Island , features a communal kitchen, a 5,000-square- foot urban farm , a 20-hive apiary (tended by farmers and beekeepers), and kombucha workshops. Developers in other complexes are adding yoga and meditation studios, bike shares, infrared saunas, and even adult treehouses. At Pierhouse, a Toll Brothers City Living condo  in Brooklyn, N.Y., every kitchen has an in-unit composter. “We had large kitchens and a lot of the units have outdoor space, so we thought people could compost in their kitchen and go right out to their garden,” David von Spreckelsen , the president of Toll Brothers City Living division , told The New York Times . The roof garden can also be a lure to many renters and condo buyers toda

Falling apart: Trump axes infrastructure advisory council

President Trump announced Thursday he will be pulling the plug on yet another advisory council – this one, on infrastructure. The council, which was still being formed, ideally would have advised the president on his highly-hyped $1 trillion infrastructure plan geared towards upgrading the country’s crumbling roads and bridges. The move comes one day after Trump announced he shut down two other job councils, amid a wave of resignations by executives in the wake of the president’s response to the violence in Charlottesville, Va. “Rather than putting pressure of the businesspeople of the Manufacturing Council & Strategy & Policy Forum, I am ending both. Thank you all!" he tweeted. News of the infrastructure advisory council falling apart came from a White House official Thursday afternoon . “The President has announced the end of the Manufacturing Council and the Strategy & Policy Forum. In addition, the President's Advisory Council on Infrastructure, which wa

Developers return with new plan next to Damen Brown Line station

Image
Despite having already received a zoning change to redevelop a parcel next to the Damen Brown Line station , the owners of the property at 4646 N. Damen Avenue have returned with a new plan which includes the neighboring property at 4650 N. Damen and bumps the density from nine dwelling units to 24, Chicago Cityscape reveals . According to the zoning application, which was introduced to the Chicago City Council in July, the plan comes from developers John and Robert Mangan’s Mangan Builders. The proposed development will replace what are currently two Victorian- era single family residences . According to the zoning application, the developer indicates that the house at 4646 N. Damen was acquired in 2016 while the adjacent property at 4650 N. Damen was purchased way back in 1978. In addition to the 24 apartments planned for the site, the developers are also proposing 4,000 square feet of ground- level retail split into two separate spaces. With its proximity to the Damen Brown Line

River Terrace Apartments

Quizzes Lists Topics Save The River Terrace Apartments is an apartment building located at 7700 East Jefferson Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. [1] River Terrace Apartments was one of the first two garden apartment complexes built in Michigan which used loan guarantees from the Federal Housing Administration , the other being Hillcrest Village in East Lansing. [2] History By the late 19th century , the corridor along East Jefferson Avenue had become a prestigious residential neighborhood . As the automobile age dawned in the twentieth century and Detroit's population boomed, large upscale apartment buildings were constructed along the Avenue. However, this boom in apartment construction collapsed at the start of the Great Depression. However, in 1939, Wesson Seyburn, along with Leonard P. Reaume, of the property management firm of Holden & Reaume, applied for a building permit to construct this apart
